The Pulaski County High School Service Learning class has announced that they will be taking part in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge this year, with the goal of collecting enough plastic bags to honor the life of Rhonda Johnston.
The NexTrex Recycling Challenge allows groups to collect plastic bags and other recyclable plastics with the goal of using that plastic for a good cause. With each 1,000- pounds of bags collected, NexTrex is able to make one memorial bench. Several of these benches can already be seen around Pulaski County and at some of our schools.
“Our first goal is to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic to make one memorial bench to honor the life of Rhonda Johnston,” PCHS Educator Mrs. Lauren Songer said. “Depending on the amount of donations, we would love to be able to have another bench made to honor the life of Dee Lindsay. We will be putting donation boxes in each pod this week as well as in the CTE office, and we will be checking the boxes each week to collect donations.”
Plastic bags from several sources may be donated. Grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, ice bags, and Ziplock and other food storage bags are just a few of the examples. The group does ask that any residue or food be rinsed off before adding it to the boxes to help control any potential smells or rodent issues.
Donations will be accepted for this project for an extended amount of time, until the goal is reached.
